With breakthroughs in composites leading to dramatic improvements in strength-to-weight ratios, these materials have become much more common in airframe components. This brings a new set of challenges to the machining process. Care must be taken to avoid breakout or delamination, fiber tear out or melting of the matrix material. Tool life tends to be shorter when cutting these materials and tools, machining strategies and cutting processes have to be selected with care to achieve the needed quality levels. Drilling of stacked materials that include aluminum or titanium alloys adds an extra level of complexity. Seco’s wide range of tools for composites applications, as well as our deep expertise in this area, are a vital resource to aerospace manufacturers.
